Fertility Is Not Just a Women’s Issue: Start with Both Partners
Topic: Male fertility
In most cultures, when a couple struggles to conceive, the spotlight turns immediately to the woman. She undergoes invasive tests, tracks her cycle, and changes her diet. The man often remains a passive observer.
This approach is medically outdated and inefficient. Male Factor Infertility accounts for 40-50% of all infertility cases. Ignoring the male half of the equation delays success and places an unfair burden on the female partner.
The Numbers
- 30% of cases are solely due to male factor.
- 20% are “combined” (issues with both partners).
- 50% are female factor or unexplained.
This means in half of all cases, the sperm quality plays a role.
Why Start with the Man?
Testing the male partner is:
- Cheaper: A Semen Analysis costs a fraction of a female workup.
- Faster: Results are available in 24 hours.
- Non-Invasive: No needles, no probes, no dyes.
Comparing this to the female workup (HSG to check tubes, daily blood draws, transvaginal ultrasounds), it makes logical sense to “rule out” the male factor first.
What the Test Checks
A standard Semen Analysis looks at three key parameters:
- Count: How many sperm are there? (>15 million/mL is normal).
- Motility: Are they swimming forward? (>40% motility is normal).
- Morphology: Are they shaped correctly? (>4% normal forms is standard).
Lifestyle Matters for Men Too
Sperm regenerates every 74 days. This means men can significantly improve their fertility in just 3 months.
- Heat: Avoid saunas, hot tubs, and keeping laptops on the lap. Heat kills sperm.
- Toxins: Smoking and vaping are sperm killers. DNA fragmentation is higher in smokers.
- Diet: Antioxidants (Vitamin C, Zinc, CoQ10, Lycopene) protect sperm from oxidative measure.
The Conversation
If you are trying to conceive, frame it as a team sport. “We are both getting checked to see what our baseline is.” Breaking the stigma starts at home.
