I Have Low AMH: Does That Mean I Can't Get Pregnant?

I Have Low AMH: Does That Mean I Can’t Get Pregnant?

Topic: Fertility testing

You do a fertility test. The doctor says “Your AMH is low.” You stick it in Google. It says “Low Ovarian Reserve.” You panic.

Stop. AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) is the most misunderstood number in fertility.

What AMH Measures

It measures Quantity. It tells us roughly how many eggs are “waking up” this month. It is a proxy for how many eggs are left in the vault.

What AMH Does NOT Measure

It does NOT measure Quality.

  • Scenario A: A 25-year-old with Low AMH (0.8). She has few eggs, but they are genetically perfect. She has an excellent chance of natural pregnancy.
  • Scenario B: A 42-year-old with High AMH (3.0). She has many eggs (often due to PCOS), but many are genetically abnormal. She might struggle more.

Can I Conceive Naturally with Low AMH?

YES. You only need one egg to ovulate. AMH predicts:

  1. Time: You might have a shorter reproductive window (menopause might come earlier).
  2. IVF Yield: If you do IVF, you will get fewer eggs per cycle (Low Responder).

But for natural conception, studies show that women with Low AMH get pregnant at the same rate as women with Normal AMH, provided they are ovulating.

Don’t treat a number. Treat the patient.
