Summer Hormone Reset: Heat, Hydration, Sleep and Energy Management
Summer Hormone Reset: Heat, Hydration, Sleep and Energy Management
Topic: Seasonal wellness
As the temperature climbs, many women notice a shift in their energy levels. You might feel more irritable, notice more bloating, or struggle with sleep.
This isn’t just “being hot.” Heat stress is a physical stressor that impacts your hormonal balance.
The Heat-Hormone Connection
- Cortisol & Adrenals: Managing body temperature is active work. When it is 40°C outside, your body releases stress hormones (cortisol/adrenaline) to manage the heart rate and cooling. Chronic heat exposure can mimic chronic stress.
- Aldosterone & Bloating: To prevent dehydration, your body releases aldosterone, which tells the kidneys to hold onto salt and water. This is why you feel puffy and have swollen fingers in summer.
- Progesterone Dip: Heat disrupts sleep. Poor sleep lowers progesterone. Low progesterone makes you feel anxious and tearful.
The Reset Protocol
Don’t fight the season. Adapt to it.
1. Hydration Beyond Water
Water alone flushes out minerals. You need Electrolytes.
- The Hack: Add a pinch of sea salt and lemon to your water bottle. Drink coconut water or buttermilk (chaas) daily.
- The Sign: If your pee is clear but you still feel thirsty or have a headache, you are low on salt/magnesium, not water.
2. Shift Your Movement
High-intensity exercise raises body temperature. In summer, this can be overkill.
- The Shift: Move your workouts to the early morning (before 8 AM). Switch from running to swimming or air-conditioned strength training. Avoid “hot yoga” if you are already overheated.
3. Cooling Foods (Ayurvedic Wisdom)
We crave ice cream (which is inflammatory sugar). Instead, focus on foods with high water content and “cooling” properties.
- Eat: Cucumber, melon, mint, coriander, fennel seeds (saunf), yogurt.
- Avoid: Excessive caffeine, spicy chilies, and heavy fried foods which increase “internal heat” (pitta).
4. Sleep Hygiene
Your body needs to drop 1-2 degrees to fall asleep. A hot room makes this impossible.
- The Hack: Take a lukewarm (not freezing) shower before bed. As the water evaporates from your skin, it cools your core temperature rapidly.
Summer doesn’t have to mean three months of exhaustion. Respect the heat, salt your water, and slow down.
